Laser Cutting: The Continuously Evolving Cutting System
10 March 2015

In a building next to the main one, Venturi Acciai has developed a department entirely dedicated to Laser Cutting.

Taglio Laser - Laser Cutting - Laserschnitt

Venturi Acciai: Laser Cutting

The department has a surface area of 2200 square meters, and is equipped with four 10 ton overhead cranes. Each overhead crane has a large stock of high range sheets, from which it supplies the Laser Cutting systems.

The thickness of the sheets varies from 3 mm to 15 mm as the maximum laser cutting capacity is 20 mm. The full thickness is not however exploited for reasons related to the correct geometry of the cuts.

The cutting machines are made in Italy and are positioned one after the other, with a work area 3 m wide and a total length of 60 m.

The 3500 Watt generators and the power source are made in Switzerland.

CO2 Laser Cutting was invented and developed a few decades ago and is still today one of the most common methods used in the industrial field.

CO2 lasers are currently the highest power continuous wave lasers available in this sector. The efficiency ratio of output power to pump power can reach 20%.

The beam of infrared light produced has the principal wavelength bands centered on around 9.4 and 10.6 micrometers.

The laser generator or amplification medium is a gas discharge tube which is air or water cooled. The gas within the discharge tube consists of:

carbon dioxide (10/20%)

nitrogen (10/20%)

hydrogen (1 -2 %)

helium (the remainder of the mixture)

The specific proportions vary according to the intended use of the laser.

This brief overview of Laser Cutting helps to better understand the delicate mechanisms and the level of sophistication of the machine parts (mirrors coated with silicon or molybdenum, germanium output lenses, and much more) as opposed to the “uncouthness” of the steel sheets, which despite being of a very high quality still remain actual hardware.

Venturi Acciai has invested in Laser Cutting in order also to be able to process large sized sheets with extreme precision (e.g. sheets measuring 3000×12000 mm). Thanks to the characteristics of the systems we are able to produce semi-finished products ready to be assembled, with accurate holes and extremely clean edges, even in the case of very elaborate cutting perimeters.

Laser Cutting is essential for the production of semi-finished products that make up crane booms, both those truck mounted behind the cab and other types generally used for lifting purposes: from concrete pumps, to the transport and handling of containers, to loading arms for the building and agricultural sectors and for forestry vehicles, etc.

The combination of modern high performance laser cutting machines, subjected to accurate maintenance to maintain their efficiency, and special steel sheets with high and very high quality characteristics, guarantees our customers an accurate result. At Venturi Acciai we not only respect the quality of the raw materials but also the rules and standards for the manufacture of products intended for a use that could endanger people and property if the work is not carried out in an absolutely ethical manner.

The machines originally used by Venturi Acciai did not include such sophisticated systems and in over 50 years we have transformed our plants to follow the technological evolution of the industrial world. We have heavily invested in technology also to encourage the economic growth of our customers, thus contributing to the development of Italy which is renowned for its great transformation capacity and its ability to create innovation.

Venturi Acciai is therefore ready to make future investments in Laser Cutting to follow the undoubted development of this cutting system that is continuously evolving.
