Plasma Cutting: for a Perfect Cut of Special Sheet Metal
09 July 2015

In the main plant where the special sheet metal cutting and cold bending activities are carried out, Venturi Acciai has installed and recently upgraded a Plasma Cutting section, which completes the cutting techniques offered by this modern company specialised in pre-processing.

The key points of this method adopted to prepare components used to make parts of machines for various industrial uses, are explained in the simple sequence below:

  • CUTTING SYSTEM: cutting using plasma, or Plasma Cutting, is simply speaking a steel fusion cutting method that adopts an electric arc constricted inside a nozzle.

This system foresees a major investment besides personnel trained and specialised in Plasma Cutting constantly followed by the production manager, the upgrade of programs to improve efficiency and the support of the system manufacturer both in terms of maintenance and performance assessment.

The dry Plasma Cutting system is made up of two machines backed by powerful Hyperterm generators; the cutting machines have two 3000 mm wide workbenches for a total length of 60,000 mm and can cut a thickness of 60 mm with a final result that is not compromised by discontinuities or differences in the angle.

The head bench was replaced at the end of 2014 and in addition to its cutting-edge operating features, the system is fitted with an efficient rotating head that allows the crimping of the edges of the cut piece, at different angles and with surfaces suitable for the subsequent assembly for welding.

  • PRODUCTIVITY and EFFICIENCY: It would not be productive to have a warehouse stocked with thousands of tons of special sheet metals, without having adequate tools to enhance their technical characteristics. Venturi Acciai’s sheet metal stock is constantly replenished by the best European steelworks with stock rotation reorders for a range of thicknesses, sizes and above all top quality, advanced technology and heat treated C-Mn sheet metal.

Venturi Acciai’s Plasma Cutting department is therefore essential to support the company’s core business that keeps the pace with the development of the arms for the construction of telescopic cranes with different sections. The Italian industry plays a very important role in this large sector, as it is among the leading world producers in this important industry; this sector requires increasingly refined and reliable steels because the projects aspire to reach “higher and higher” with “increasingly lighter structures”.

Fortunately today’s steels meet the challenge and the processing activities must also provide a reliable result: perfect cuts are necessary, with edges free of crack initiators for assemblies with full-penetration welding, to ensure the maximum safety coefficient: this is achieved with Plasma Cutting.

Plasma Cutting offers advantages to this type of construction and this “cold” cut provides guarantees under all points of view also in the workshop: geometries, resistance, yield strength and resilience are all synonyms for a well-built component that participates in the industrial battle of this sector which takes place in the global market.

Venturi Acciai, with its systems and guaranteed quality oriented philosophy, plays its role, not free from economic sacrifices, to support a market phase that is still weak. Evidence of this is the new Rotating Head Plasma, a significant investment made despite the enduring crisis, in order to meet the requirements of a market that pursues excellent quality.

Plasma Cutting completes the trilogy of the company’s three heat cutting systems: laser, plasma and oxycutting. In this way, Venturi Acciai can satisfy its customersstarting fromthin thicknesses–e.g. less than3mm-up tothicker ones–e.g. up to 350 mm.

Investments, upgrades, qualified and certified raw materials are the must for this certified company that, despite the past global economic crises and the current one that has yet to pass, is present on the market with the confidence that it can meet the requirements of a wide range of processes, which require the use of top range structural and wear-resistant sheet metal.
