Cold Bending of Special Metal Sheets: Venturi Acciai is Synonymous with Experience and Technological Value
17 March 2015

In the main plant, with a covered area of over 12,000 square meters, Venturi Acciai has a big oxycutting department with 8 systems of considerable size, as well as a large Cold Bending department.

The latter boasts a high technological content as well as considerable experience gained over many years of work with steels that are difficult to process and that do not allow for mistakes, as the consequence would be financially burdensome.

Venturi Acciai: Cold Bending

Cold Bending of steel sheet parts with a yield strength that goes from a minimum of 700 Mpa to 900 and 960 Mpa and to end with 1100 and 1300 Mpa, requires mechanical power but above all experience and in-depth knowledge.

These are often parts of machines or equipment to be assembled by the various customers, which are used for lifting, transport or handling. Given the intended use of such sophisticated steel these parts are designed to work under high stress.

Examples include telescopic crane booms that lift weights dozens of meters high, arms of complex mechanisms such as elevated work platforms to carry men that work almost suspended in the air, pumps for concrete with an amazing delivery force so that the mix can reach the highest floors, transporters to handle large containers, which in ports stack them vertically and horizontally to the limit of the barycentre; equipment which, in general, must withstand all the moments of materials physics in order not to collapse and must resist the forces applied as well as to constant wear.

Other examples can be found by looking at the infrastructures and superstructures around us; moving means that contribute to maintain and improve our society.

Venturi Acciai is part of this industry and the machines in the Cold Bending department bend these special steels, which until not long ago had to be welded. The steel is bent using a cold process that reduces self-weight, increases the ability to withstand greater stress and resistance in general by increasing the safety factors. At the end of the process this system also contributes a little to the sustainability of the planet.

We have the following bending machines duly positioned to be supplied with the metal sheets available in the well stocked warehouse:

hydraulic bending machine:  length 3,000 mm, work area 250 mm, power 120 tonnes;

bending press:  length 6,000 mm, work area 350 mm, power 330 tonnes;

bending press:  length 4,000 mm, work area 1300 mm, power 600 tonnes;

bending press:  length 10,000 mm, work area 700 mm, power 1,200 tonnes;

bending press:  length 12,000 mm, work area 320 mm, power 1,700 tonnes.

The data is sent online from the Technical Department to the CAD CAM work stations that are directly interfaced with the systems.

This department has a considerable number of machines ready to tackle any strenuous work involving the cold bending of steels that, at present, are mechanically more resistant yet suitable and sometimes necessary to develop a new project or an innovative application.

Venturi Acciai, thanks to the Cold Bending department has carried out projects of different nature in terms of application and size without ever receiving negative feedback from unsatisfied customers or disappointed designers.

Thanks to our great experience in this sector and our long-standing and positive relationship with the best branded steel sheet manufacturers we are able to clearly explain in the preliminary phase what can and what can’t be done with certain types of steel. The major manufacturers of steel sheets keep us informed on the research and development they carry out and on the progress of new technologies, applications and processing and on the possibility of experimenting and testing new solutions.
